Tanzania opens Barcelona pathway

BARCELONA: TANZANIA and Spanish giants Barcelona FC are set to forge a groundbreaking partnership in youth football development, following a visit of Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Paul Makonda, for a high-profile four-day official tour at the personal invitation of club President Joan Laporta.

The strategic visit officially got underway on Monday, aimed at revolutionising football structures across Tanzania through a direct collaborative framework. Makonda held extensive and productive discussions with the club’s top hierarchy to explore immediate avenues of cooperation. Crucially, the high-level talks focused much on grassroots talent identification, technical development and modern national team management structures.

The visiting Tanzanian delegation is particularly keen to leverage Barcelona’s world-renowned expertise to significantly bolster their domestic preparations ahead of hosting the prestigious 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.

Barcelona is globally revered for its legendary academy infrastructure and youth systems that consistently serve as the ultimate blueprint for modern football excellence.

The club’s profound footprint on the global stage was heavily emphasised, noting that a significant majority of Spain’s 2026 FIFA World Cup-winning squad were nurtured through the ranks of the iconic Catalan institution.

During the diplomatic visit, president Laporta also took the opportunity to extend profound condolences to President Samia Suluhu Hassan, following the tragic passing of her husband, Mzee Hafidh Ameir Hassan last week. Laporta formally handed over a special condolence letter to Minister Makonda to deliver to President Samia, urging her to remain strong, patient and courageous throughout this challenging period of mourning.

Makonda is accompanied on the vital European mission by a powerhouse delegation of sports experts from his ministry, the National Sports Council and the Tanzania Football Federation.

As a grand finale to the tour, the Tanzanian delegation is scheduled to attend Barcelona’s upcoming fixture against Racing Santander today.

The delegation will watch the match live from the presidential box at the majestic Camp Nou stadium, seated alongside their official host President Laporta, cementing a historic new era of footballing ties.
