Samia Scholarship opens new digital future for Tanzania’s youths

TANZANIA: AS the world moves deeper into the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science and digital technologies, Tanzania is positioning itself to participate actively in the global technological transformation by investing in one of its most valuable resources — its young people.

Through the Samia Scholarship Extended Programme, 34 Tanzanian students who successfully completed a ten-month preparatory course are this year beginning a new academic journey in Ireland, where they will pursue undergraduate studies in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science and Cybersecurity.

Their journey represents more than an opportunity to obtain academic qualifications abroad. It reflects Tanzania’s long-term commitment to developing a generation of skilled professionals who will use technology, research and innovation to address national challenges and support economic development.

The initiative demonstrates a shift towards building a knowledge-based economy where human capital, creativity and technological expertise become key drivers of national progress.

Vice-Chancellor of the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), Professor Maulilio Kipanyula, describes the programme as a strategic investment designed to produce experts capable of creating technological solutions rather than depending entirely on innovations developed elsewhere.

According to Prof Kipanyula, artificial intelligence is expected to significantly influence various sectors in the coming years, including healthcare, agriculture, education, business, finance, energy, transportation and public service delivery.

He said Tanzania will increasingly require professionals with advanced skills in data analytics, AI development, cybersecurity and digital innovation to respond effectively to emerging challenges and opportunities.

The growing importance of technology globally has created a need for countries to prepare their citizens with relevant knowledge and skills. For Tanzania, investing in strategic areas such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity is part of a broader effort to strengthen competitiveness and ensure that the country benefits from the opportunities created by digital transformation.

The Samia Scholarship Programme reflects the government’s vision of developing human capital as the foundation of sustainable economic growth. Professor Kipanyula said the scholarship beneficiaries have an important responsibility because they represent Tanzania wherever they go.

He noted that the knowledge and experience gained abroad should become a valuable resource when the students return home to support innovation, improve public services and strengthen the country’s digital transformation efforts.

Development partners, private sector organisations, financial institutions, technology companies, universities and Tanzanians living abroad all have an important role to play in supporting education, research, innovation and skills development.

Investment in scholarships, technology laboratories, research centres, innovation hubs and youth training programmes will be critical in creating an environment where young professionals can turn knowledge into practical solutions.

Tanzania has significant potential to emerge as a technology hub in East Africa, supported by its youthful population, expanding internet access, growing digital economy policies and an improving environment for investment.

With continued focus on Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Cybersecurity and innovation, the country can develop globally competitive technology companies, create high-value employment opportunities and produce digital solutions that benefit not only Tanzania but also the wider African continent.

The success of the Samia Scholarship Programme is therefore expected to extend beyond the individual achievements of the beneficiaries. One of the scholarship beneficiaries, Angela Mongi, said the students understand the responsibility placed upon them and are committed to using the knowledge they acquire to serve their country.
