Meet Bill Trachman, the New United States Ambassador to Tanzania
William Trachman has just taken up his position in Dar-es-salaam as the new United States Ambassador to Tanzania, under President Donald Trump’s administration.
At first glance Bill looks like someone you once saw in a movie, especially the one adopted from one of John Grisham’s novels.
Ambassador Trachman was sworn-in as the 21st American Ambassador to the United Republic of Tanzania on August 19, 2026.
William Trachman automatically also becomes the U.S envoy to the East African Community (EAC), which operates from Arusha City.
What he said
I look forward to working with Tanzanian Government and People to strengthen our partnership, expand opportunities for American investment and trade, advance security cooperation and promote natural rights and the rule of law.
William Trachman – New U.S Ambassador to Tanzania
He essentially succeeds Ambassador Michael Battle, who served as the U.S ambassador to Tanzania from February 2023 to January 2025.
In between, (February 2025 to October 2026) Andrew Lentz stood in as an interim Chargé d’affaires at the Embassy.
Trachman’s background is in civil rights, regulatory reform, bargaining and negotiations, and business law.
The envoy most recently served as General Counsel (2021-2026) of Mountain States Legal Foundation (MSLF), an impact-litigation firm dedicated to protecting the U.S. Constitution.
Prior to joining MSLF, he was appointed to the role of Deputy Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights in the U.S. Department of Education (2017-2019).
He has also worked as General Counsel to the Douglas County School District, and as a civil litigator at several prominent law firms.
Trachman previously served as Chair of the Federalist Society’s Executive Committee on Civil Rights, as Vice Chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights’ Colorado Advisory Committee, and as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law.
The Ambassador graduated cum laude from the University of California, Berkeley with a bachelor’s degree in 2002.
He also obtained a Juris Doctor degree from U.C. Berkeley in 2005, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Berkeley Journal of International Law.
After law school, he clerked for the Honorable Harris Hartz of the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Bill has over 20 years of experience navigating complex disputes, bringing parties to the table, and finding creative solutions to reach favorable outcomes in high stakes matters.
An earlier report about Trachman for the committee on foreign relations, praised the envoy’s ability to solve conflicts amicably.
It was in early 2026, during the time when William Trachman was serving as General Counsel for Mountain States Legal Foundation, where he protected the rights of individuals to live freely and securely under the U.S. Constitution
The Report said …
