ARUSHA: THE Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) has earned praise from the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) for its impactful research aimed at addressing pressing societal and industrial challenges across Africa.
The commendation came during a visit to the Arusha-based institution by members of EALA, led by Chairperson of the Assembly’s General Affairs Committee Dr Abdullah Makame.
Dr Makame lauded NM-AIST as one of the most productive research institutions within the East African Community (EAC), recognising its strong focus on practical research that fosters social development and drives industrial innovation—particularly in areas that stimulate employment.
“These institutions are playing a key role in addressing employment challenges through agricultural, industrial and other sector-based research. NM-AIST stands out for linking academic work with real-world applications,” he said.
He further highlighted the institute’s unique academic approach, which is structured around five core pillars. This, he noted, distinguishes NM-AIST from other institutions in the region and strengthens its contribution to scientific innovation, especially in tackling climate change and its effects on social and economic development.

“We were particularly impressed by innovations such as crop-drying machines designed to protect both users’ health and the environment,” Dr Makame added.
NM-AIST’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academics, Research and Innovation, Professor Anthony Mshandete said that the institution’s research is solutionoriented, targeting practical responses to health, economic and social challenges.
“Our focus is on sustainable innovation. Every research project here is designed to provide tangible solutions to real problems facing communities and industries,” he said.
During the joint session, EALA members also provided feedback and suggestions to support the institute’s alignment with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, a strategic framework for the continent’s socio-economic transformation.
The visit underscored a shared commitment between EALA and higher education institutions to leverage science and technology as catalysts for sustainable development across Africa. While at NM-AIST, the legislators toured key facilities, including the library, research laboratories, Artificial Intelligence Lab, ICT Resource Centre, DDI Micro-Factory and the C-CODE Centre.
